A Cigar Smoker's Oasis: by Sarah Henry
Comfortable is a rustic brick building on Main Street, Nyack Tobacco Company is a cigar smoker's sanctuary in an age of almost universal public bans,
"This is an oasis" said Tom Della Torre, who took over operations in March. "There's a desert out there when it come to cigar smoking, and this is a place where you can come and drink from the trough...enjoy yourself."
Cigar smoking was hip in the '90s but public smoking bans have spread and all but a few refuges have been snuffed out.
Nyack Tobacco Co. has endured since 1995, a combination tobacco/full accessories retail store and casual lounge where people who cherish the rich aromas can settle into leather chairs and let stress waft away.
Cigar loving day traders slip away from the city and set up office, taking advantage of the Wi-Fi for their laptops and financial nws on big-screen TV. Sports fans also frequent.
"It's a great place if you enjoy cigars to come watch a ball game, watch the financial news, use our Wi Fi and just spend some time enjoying the cigar, the camaraderie," Della Torre said. "Almost like the traditional barber shop, a place that's more than a place to get your hair cut. This is more than a place to buy a cigar."
Each week brings a different featured cigar with a buy-two, one-free discount. A 10 percent break is offered on most full boxes.
"Events," usually sponsored by cigar manufacturers are common. November;s big bash was the Election Night Smoke Out.
Della Torre calls the spacious humidor the "heart" of the business. It is a treasure chest of fine cigars, including the premium Davidoff "White Label", available in only 200 US stores.
NTC also offers an array of products and services for golf and country clubs, marinas and yacht clubs, caterers and event planners and cigar-friendly restaurants.
Della Torre said NTC has built its reputation on its large selection of premium cigars, fair prices, care for the product and friendly and knowledgeable staff.
"It's the product and the service," he said.
